Over the last 6 months, WRL has developed the ‘Secure fishery resource access rights in Western Australia – Policy Position Paper September 2020‘ to strengthen the resource access rights for all fisheries in Western Australia. This process has included input on issues affecting individual fisheries as well as engaging subject experts.
The Policy Paper has been endorsed by WAFIC and the Sector Bodies, which makes it a whole of industry-supported document. You can read the Policy Paper by clicking here.
The Policy Paper was submitted to the Legislative Council Standing Committee on Public Administration Inquiry into Private Property Rights on 13 August 2020 by WAFIC, which complements industry’s earlier submissions to that Inquiry.
The Policy Paper has also been supplied to Minister Tinley, and WRL is meeting with the Minister this coming Monday to provide him with a comprehensive briefing about its contents, including why and how the Policy Paper should be implemented.
WRL is proud to now be able to provide our Members with the Policy Paper. This is an incredibly important document for the future of our industry, as well as the future of all Western Australian fisheries so we encourage you to read the document in its entirety.
WRL now enters a phase of advocacy for the implementation of the Policy Paper recommendations. This will involve meeting with WA Members of Parliament and key stakeholders. WRL has also engaged the expert services of Quinn Emanuel to produce tracked changes to the Aquatic Resources Management Act 2016 and the Fisheries Adjustment Schemes Act 1987 to give effect to the Policy Paper, with those tracked changes also to be submitted to the Inquiry into Private Property Rights.
