Global leaders in innovative, sustainable lobster management

Season’s Greetings from WRL: Message from the Chair

I would like to extend my personal thanks to our many members, stakeholders, PFAs and WRLC Directors who have contributed to the extensive range of activities and achievements by the industry in 2017. Many milestones have been achieved which puts the industry in a fantastic position to address our future challenges and develop a number of opportunities to further improve the industry over the coming year and beyond.

The launch of the Economic Contribution Report which was announced by the Minister for Fisheries Hon Dave Kelly MLA on Friday 8 December reveals the Western Rock Lobster industry is a major contributor to economic growth and job creation in Western Australia. It marks the beginning of a new and exciting chapter in our history and confirms the status of the Western Rock Lobster industry as a vital contributor to the Western Australian economy. Importantly, as an industry we are always looking to the future. This report signals our intent to continue to build our industry and it is our hope that within a decade we will be celebrating a $1billion industry.

The WRLC has continued to develop very strong and collaborative relationships with the DPIRD Division of Fisheries, the Minister’s Office, and many other important stakeholders. These activities are essential to ensure that critical stakeholders clearly understand and effectively overcome challenges that face our industry and that we continue to realise opportunities tor growth. It also provides a valuable opportunity for the WRLC to demonstrate the responsible commercial and strategic approach being undertaken by the commercial rock lobster industry in managing an important and sustainable community resource.

The WRLC’s focus for the year ahead will be to increase value and security for the western rock lobster industry through the delivery of the WRLC strategic plan priorities for 2018. It is important that all members and stakeholders continue to actively engage in industry issues and with the WRLC. I look forward to working closely with many of you in the forthcoming year.

I would like to express my thanks to the Board and the many members who have made a valuable contribution to the growth and success of the industry in 2017. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the CEO and the WRLC staff for the great work they have carried out over the past year.

My very best wishes for a safe and happy festive season and a successful and prosperous 2018.

Best wishes,

Kim Colero
