Pelsaert (WA) Pty Ltd – Aquaculture Licence and Lease, Abrolhos Islands

On 2 November 2018, Pelsaert (WA) Pty Ltd made an application to the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) to vary its Licence, which authorises the aquaculture of Akoya pearl oyster, bat wing pearl oyster, black lip pearl oyster, Shark Bay pearl oyster, Hymedesmiidae, Iriniidae, Latrunculiidae, Mycalidae, Spongiidae and Thorectidae at an an offshore site near the Southern Group at the Abrolhos Islands.

Amendment of the West Coast Rock Lobster Managed Fishery Management Plan 2012

On Friday 14 December, WRL received a Draft Amendment of the West Coast Rock Lobster Managed Fishery Management Plan 2012, from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD). The draft amendment to the Management Plan provides for an increase in the quota available to existing licensees of 315 tonnes from 2019. It also provides for a West Coast Rock Lobster Managed Fishery Licence (licence) to be granted to the Body Corporate under the Industry Technology and Development Act 1998 (i.e. Government) and for that licence to have units of entitlement (having equivalent values to existing units) conferred on it. Collectively, the amendment provides for the Total Allowable Commercial Catch (TACC) to be increased to 8,000 tonnes, with the new units to be brought into fishing progressively from 2020 to 2023.

Abrolhos Aquaculture Australia Pty Ltd – Aquaculture Licence, Abrolhos Islands

Abrolhos Aquaculture Australia Pty Ltd (AAA) has applied to vary its Licence, to include various species of scallops, clams, oysters, sea cucumbers, sponges and sea urchins as well as add an existing jetty facility to the authorised site located on Rat Island in the Abrolhos Islands.

Armstrong Aquaculture Licence and Lease, Abrolhos Islands

Industry feedback due 27 July 2018

Peter and Karen Armstrong have applied to vary their licence and lease to increase the existing site to a total of 332 square metres, which includes the addition of a 76 square metre offshore area and the addition of the following species: squid (Sepioteuthis australis); cuttlefish (Sepia apama); and green algae (Caulerpa lentillifera). The proponent is also seeking to apply for an exemption to enable it to collect broodstock of the proposed species.

Mandatory Float-Free EPIRBs

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has opened public consultation on proposed changes to the National Standard for Commercial Vessel (NSCV) and other instruments to mandate the carriage of float-free emergency position-indication radio beacons (EPRIBs) on certain kinds of domestic commercial vessels (DCVs).
