Western Rock Lobster Market Report | November 2020

Please read on for updated information regarding catches in the western rock lobster fishery, rock lobster exports from Western Australia, and lobster imports into China.

Catch Data for the Western Rock Lobster Fishery

The ‘Catch Balance Graph By Zone (Warehouse)’ report is prepared twice-monthly by DPIRD, most recently on 28 November. It provides information on entitlement landed within the West Coast Rock Lobster Managed Fishery (WCRLMF), on a monthly and zonal basis.

Please note that the data presented do not necessarily represent all fishing activity for the period, particularly with reference to delays in receiving and entering catch data from fishers and processors. Regarding the figures for the latest month, an eventual revision of 10–25 per cent would not be at all inconsistent with the historical pattern of revisions.

WCRLMF landed catch, monthly
WCRLMF landed catch, monthly, northern zones
WCRLMF landed catch, monthly, Zone C

Rock Lobster Exports from Western Australia

Western Australia exports of non-frozen rock lobster, quantity and unit value, monthly

Lobster imports into China

China imports of lobster, value by product type, monthly

China imports of non-frozen spiny lobster, quantity by origin, monthly

Regarding the above two charts, please note that the apparent increase in imports of non-frozen spiny lobster from Vietnam is thought to be a statistical artefact rather than a genuine increase. Market sources suggest that the stringent border controls implemented in response to COVID-19 have resulted in official statistics now capturing much of the trade that was previously flowing through informal channels.
