Important Health and Safety Topics

As usual, Brett McCallum keeps us in touch with health and safety developments affecting our industry.  He recently brought the following important items to our attention.  If you want to speak to Brett about these his details are also below.

  1. Review of the operational effectiveness of the Work Health and Safety Act (WA).  WorkSafe are seeking feedback on specific aspects of the Act. Among other questions the Minister and WorkSafe want to know about any negative effects of complying with the legislation, and your views on the effectiveness of incident notifications, consultation and dispute resolution processes and the introduction of infringement notices. They have issued a discussion paper and designed a submission template for people to use to give feedback.  This is an opportunity to put your views on specific issues identified by other industries as problems with the WHS system in WA. If you have a concern and aren’t sure if it is relevant have a look at the questions being asked in the template.  If you want to make your own submission, submissions will close on 28 November at 5pm. Alternatively, you may provide us information to make a consolidated submission on your behalf.

  2. AMSA will be looking at safety management systems as part of ongoing vessel inspections and remind you that compliance with Marine Order 504 (Certificates of Operation) for relevant vessels is mandatory. For more information please see changes to SMS requirements for domestic commercial vessels.

Check the AMSA website HERE for additional guidance.
