In October 2018, Western Rock Lobster launched its industry DECK Program (Development Education Capacity Knowledge) forum which aims to deliver quality professional development learning for industry’s next generation of leaders.

The idea behind the DECK Program is simple: to give young participants of the western rock lobster industry the tools they would need to become advocates for their fishery and encourage them to step into positions of leadership.

The program’s interactive sessions provide the opportunity for participants to strengthen their knowledge and skills around resource management, representing industry and operating small businesses. The DECK Program also seeks to foster new relationships and networks including through a relaxing dinner held between the two half-day sessions.

Read about participants’ experiences of last year’s DECK Program here.

Aimed at the industry’s next-generation, the DECK Program offers a variety of education sessions and workshops led by subject matter experts from across Australia. The two-day program covers a range of topics including technology, markets, governance, safety, and industry management in addition to business-related topics such as office administration, managing people and succession planning.

Why attend the DECK Program forums?

WRL recognises the need to invest in human resource in our industry. The focus of the DECK Program is to deliver quality professional learning to the western rock lobster sector. We constantly hear from our members, skippers and fishers how there are so many professional development workshops available in agriculture, but that those opportunities are not as abundant, or accessible, to fishers.

The DECK Program addresses this concern by providing a forum series with expert presenters to help the next generation of our industry develop their industry knowledge, skills, capability and networks to continually improve their fishing operations and business management.

As well as professional development, the DECK Program will also provide an opportunity for those in the western rock lobster industry to meet like-minded people up and down the coast, in various types of industry operations, and share ideas, knowledge and interests.

Who is the DECK Program aimed at?

This two-day program is open to all WRL Members, skippers, deckies and commercial fishers of the western rock lobster industry.

The workshop is designed for younger participants in the western rock lobster industry who want to strengthen their knowledge and skills around resource management, representing industry and operating small businesses.

What will the DECK Program involve?

The forums will run over two days, with a social dinner on Thursday night so you can develop your networks and relationships with others in the industry. This year’s program will be held on Wednesday 13th and Thursday 14th of October 2021 at Sonar Room in Fremantle.
