Subsurface Sensors on Lobster Pots
WRL has successfully trialled attaching subsurface depth and temperature sensors to lobster pots and will be expanding the project. Currently we have fishers operating out of Geraldton and Mandurah and are very keen to find more to cover a larger geographical area. So places like Fremantle, Lancelin, Dongara, Cervantes, Kalbarri, Two Rocks or Leeman. The system and sensors (once installed) are completely hands free and require no interaction from crew.
The data collected has many different uses, including general marine climate modelling, monitoring and understanding the impact of environmental events (like the recent marine heatwave), to helping DPIRD scientists to monitor and predict the timing of lobster reproduction, migration and catchability. Vessels that participate in the program receive a copy of data via email, which can also provide specific insights into the fishing operations of that vessel.
If you are interested in participating or have any questions, please email chris.king@westernrocklobster.org with details of which port you operate out of, and how many months of the year you fish.
