In October, Western Rock Lobster (WRL) proudly hosted its sixth annual Development Education Capacity Knowledge (DECK) Program, a unique professional development event for the next generation of leaders in the Western rock lobster industry. Held in Geraldton from midday on Tuesday, 15th October to midday on Wednesday, 16th October, the 2024 DECK Program provided industry members with valuable learning, networking, and hands-on opportunities.
The program kicked off with a session led by WRL Chair Russell Barnett on resource access security, followed by interactive presentations on emerging technologies, cash flow management, succession planning, and insights on Australia’s response to the China trade ban. Participants explored current industry challenges and innovations through expert-led discussions, including FRDC’s Kyaw Kyaw Soe Hlaing, OceanWatch Australia’s Kristin Hoel, and DPIRD’s Principal Research Scientist, Simon de Lestang, who shared critical information on climate change and environmental impacts on the lobster resource.
Hands-On Learning and Networking
A highlight of this year’s DECK Program was an exclusive tour of WRL Co-Deputy Chair Bruce Cockman’s new vessel under construction at Dongara Marine. Set to launch in 2025, Bruce’s boat will be the largest lobster vessel constructed by Dongara Marine, spanning 26.8 meters with a beam of 7.6 meters, powered by two 1400hp MAN V12 engines. With a capacity of 200 baskets, this state-of-the-art vessel reflects the cutting-edge capabilities shaping the future of the industry.
Networking is central to the DECK Program’s mission, and the social dinner held at Laian Restaurant provided participants with a relaxed setting to connect with peers, Board members, industry experts, and guest speakers, encouraging interesting discussions and the exchange of ideas.
Positive Participant Feedback
Feedback from this year’s participants was overwhelmingly positive. In the post-event survey, all respondents indicated that they would recommend the DECK Program to others and expressed a strong likelihood of attending similar events in the future. This enthusiastic response underscores the program’s value in delivering industry-specific skills and fostering connections across the Western rock lobster community.
Exploring Key Industry Topics
Sessions on the second day included an exploration of workplace safety culture with Mel Edwards and Steve McMahon, WA coordinators for the Stay Afloat program, the use of WRL benchmark data to improve business profitability, and insights from WRL Economist Daniel Fels on enhancing operational efficiency. Wrapping up the program, WRL fisherman Matt Ottersen shared his experiences from recent industry events, including Seafood Directions and the Marine Hybrid & Electric Expo.
Supporting Leadership Development in the Lobster Industry
The DECK Program offers WRL members, skippers, deckhands, and commercial fishers the opportunity to participate at no cost, with financial assistance available for travel and accommodation to ensure accessibility for all.
This year’s DECK Program reflects WRL’s commitment to empowering the future leaders of the Western rock lobster industry and fostering a collaborative, skilled, and resilient community. With overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants, WRL looks forward to continuing to develop the DECK Program to support the industry’s evolving needs.
