The state process for amending the FRMA is in progress. WRL made a submission to DPIRD on 18 December 2025 and are awaiting a response from DPIRD.
Final Principles to guide Fisheries Policy and Legislation Reform were endorsed by all stakeholders (DPIRD, WRL, WAFIC, ACWA and RecfishWest) on 23 September 2025. A copy of these principles are available HERE
The government then invited Peak Bodies to propose amendments to the Fish Resources Management Act 1994 (WA) and related policies to support implementation of these Principles in two stages. Stage 1 is focused specifically on implementing Principle 3.
The WRL Board established a high‑level strategic advisory group to guide the development of WRL’s response. The advisory group met a number of times in late 2025 and prepared a draft response, which the WRL Board endorsed for submission.
A brief summary of WRL’s proposed amendments is provided HERE
The complete copy of WRL’s formal submission to DPIRD is available HERE
As requested by DPIRD, the submission sets out the proposed Stage 1 and Stage 2 amendments to the FRMA and supporting policy instruments.
The submission was provided to DPIRD on 18 December 2025, and WRL is now awaiting an initial response. Once received, detailed consultation on the proposal will begin. WRL will continue to keep members informed throughout this process.
The state review process and the WRL submission will be discussed at the annual management meetings in March 2026.
